Indian attack on French Colonials (Brink of Battle)

Played a 500points Brink of Battle skirmish with fellow Lead Adventure Forum member Preedh earlier this week. Something we had planned for last week but which had to be postponed. Anyway, I tweaked the lists from my previous demo game so that we now had 500points per side (8 miniatures of Indians and 10 miniatures of Colonials).

It also turned out to be a very bloody fight compared to previous games.

Turn 1 Mohawk initiative
Once again the old European soldier led his Mohawk raiders to terrorize the local colonials – this time they were of French origin. The French started spread out around the house slightly off center while the raiding force came in from the left.

Moving through the vegetation the Indians sneaked up on the Colonial French, they were however spotted by one of the French militiamen who fired a shot at the enemy and in one lucky roll dropped one of the Mohawks dead while warning his friends about the enemy presence. The close combat veteran Mohawk warrior runs off in panic in the opposite direction. Soon sporadic shooting erupted along the treeline, the Colonials mostly in the open, got caught in the crossfire. The leader of the Mohawk raiders, the old European soldier lined up a shot with his musket and fired at the French commander who was busy yelling orders to his troops. The French commander was shot in the back and killed outright – sending a nearby French Regular to run off in panic while the leadership carried over to the burly veteran off a French Grenadier.

Turn 2 Mohawk initiative
Keeping the initiative the Mohawk raiders moved up to more favorable positions, moving and firing using both trees and smoke as concealment. The disarrayed French colonials were still trying to organize some sort of battle plan while dodging bullets. One of the Mohawks jumped into cover and shot a French Militiaman frantically reloading his musket while the commander of the Mohawk raiders lined up another shot and dropped one of the French regulars with his perfect aim.
The French had lost 3 men already and things looked  grim.

Turn 3 French Colonial initiative
The Grenadier passes the Rout Check – keeping his men in the fight while pressing a counterattack. The Colonials gather on the field near the stone wall and start shooting back at the attacking Mohawks. A French militiaman raises his musket ready to shoot a nearby Mohawk but is himself shot dead by the enemy “Break” action! Exchanging fire with the Mohawk commander both the enemy commander and a French militiaman is “Stunned” as both sides keep shooting like mad.
Another French Militiaman is killed by enemy musket fire reducing the Colonial defenders to 50%!

Turn 4 Mohawk initiative

The French once again pass their Rout test and stay in the fight – refusing to give in. This time a Militiaman manages to kill one of the Mohawks with his “Break” action. Now the enemy has 25% casualties and will also be taking Rout tests at the start of next turn.
The Mohawk raiders move up closer and fire at the defenders covering in the field. Another French regular is shot while the remainder of the French force has little luck hitting the enemy troops.

Turn 5 Mohawk initiative
The French force finally Routs from battle. The Mohawk raiders pass their Rout test and emerge victorious.

The after action events show that both enemy Mohawks had been mortally wounded. The French Colonials were shot up pretty badly though. The French Commander was hit in a major artery and lost a lot of blood which reduced all of his stats by 1 permanently. The Regulars and Militiamen suffered from a variety of Mangled Flesh, Sucking Chest wounds, Internal Bleedings and mental trauma in the shape of Horrors of War. In other words – those that were dropped in battle were as good as dead.

We also tried out a mini “Period 1” skirmish with just 3 miniatures per side to focus on close combat rules. Don’t have the army lists in electronic form, but it was roughly 180points per side. With 2 close combat soldiers and 1 bowman. A mix of heavy and medium armor, shields, greatswords and skills. I hope we can get a proper sized game focused on Period 1 played next time we meet. Preedh has a bunch of Period 1 suited miniatures which he used for his Song of Blades and Heroes. I myself am really damn tempted to buy some Samurai miniatures since you can cover pretty much all types of weapons with that Period 1 (Primitive handguns = awesome) and Japan and the Samurai are such a rich setting to build skirmish forces around.
