It's amazing what three days can do. On Wednesday morning, the Pittsburgh Penguins were Stanley Cup favorites. By Friday night, fans and media were demanding they 1) fire the coach; 2) get five new defensemen; 3) jettison the Art Ross Trophy winner and likely league MVP; or 4) all of the above. And the fans and media are not joking.
The Pittsburgh Penguins trail the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0 in their best-of-7 series, which many Pittsburghers would have you believe is a strong indicator that Armageddon is at hand. People have short memories. Placed into historical context, it really means little. Great Penguins teams have trailed by two games in a playoff series many times, certainly in recent years, and dating back to the Cup wins in the early 90's. You think this is bad? I recall Dino Ciccarelli scoring 4 goals in a 7-2 win at the Civic Arena to put the Capitals up 3-1 in a playoff series. Those Penguins ran off 12 wins in the next 14 games to take the Cup. Championship teams overcome this kind of adversity all the time. Go look it up. Or don't. And if you don't think they've got it in them this time around, don't bother watching.
We'll be watching. LGP.
