Harley Quinn (repainted face and minor details)

The face kept nagging me, especially how the eyes just disappeared behind the sooted makeup. It made me repaint the face with a couple of watered down layers of white color and repaint the eyes for the 15th time.

I also made a few improvements, like the hair, and a few highlights (some of which are on the back of the legs and not seen in the pictures).

I figured since I'm painting this one for Thomas (out of pure interest and free of charge) I really wanted it to look the way I would have painted my own once I order one. I would feel embarrassed if I painted my own model differently/better. I'll see what Thomas has to say about the changes, it would not be a lot of work to change back to the skintone if he ends up disliking it.

Harley Quinn painted up, Thomas will make his own custom base so I left that detail alone.
I had some problems making the sooted eyes look good on this mini. It took me several attempts and before I landed on the current version the eyes looked like everything from bruised/drugged, old hooker look, emo look to plain crazy eyes. I finally settled for the current version.

Not much more to say really, I painted her to look the way she does in Batman: Arkham City as I think that is the best look.  There was always the option to paint her "in mourning" the way she looks in "Harley's Revenge" but then the color palette would be quite dull.

I check the scale over at Knight Models, the Batman miniatures are 35mm foot to eye, so rather big and not really compatible with anything but really beefed up "Heroic" scale stuff. Though they seem to be sculpted in a realistic fashion rather than heroic proportions, a lot like  "Hasslefree Miniatures" which has slender females and very tiny and thin details.

Harley Quinn WIP

This is a "Knight Models" Harley Quinn in 32-35mm scale (don't remember exactly but I know it won't mix well with much on the market). My buddy Thomas bought a few blisters of their Batman Arkham City range which is based upon the recent game with the same name, and I told him I would paint up Harley for free as I really like that character and the miniature looked cool.

I wasn't happy with the hair though, the pigtails were weirdly shaped and I wanted them more realistic and fluffy. The temple on one side had been slightly messed up during casting so I had to apply a ultra thin layer of green stuff and add some hair texture. I also wanted the parted fringe to be a bit more pronounced and thicker so I added that as well.

All in all some 35-40 minutes of work with a tiny needle. I think it will look good with paint on.

For those not familiar with Harley Quinn, she could be described as the love interest of the Joker and her character originates from the animated series (which is damn good). She is quite insane and overprotective of the Joker which is the main focus of her life. The love however is pretty much a one way affair since the Joker finds her annoying and is constantly scolding her. He also doesn't mind using her as bait for trapping Batman or leave her behind when his plans are ruined.


In any case, I will most likely buy this mini and the Catwoman mini for myself down the road and make small dioramas for both as I don't see them being used for mini wargaming at all.

Caprica Six - Battlestar Galactica

I don't know when I first saw this miniature, it was on the Lead Adventure Forum and I think it was a limited edition sale or something which I missed out on. Many months later, while browsing Hasslefree I saw that they had her in their collection along with (sadly) a gnomish version of both Admiral Adama and Colonel Saul Tigh. Had those other two been sculpted with normal human proportions I would have bought them as well without hesitation. But as it was, I only bought Caprica Six or as she is called on the Hasslefree site "Rae".

For those of you not familiar with Battlestar Galactica, it's an excellent SciFi show which lasted for 4 seasons and some additional webb-episodes and a tv-movie "Razor". Though the TV-show started a decline during the 3rd season, and the last one being in my humble opinion mainly crap. The first two seasons are superb though, so I would highly recommend watching those to any fan of SciFi.

As usual the customer service from Hasslefree is amazing, store owners must be some of the friendliest people in the business.

"Hello Cathy" limited edition miniature

Saw it over at Steve Dean painting about 2 weeks ago and I just had to get it as a "grown up/adult version" of the little rebel kid with the teddy bear I painted up for a classmate earlier this year.

The model is probably still available from Cool Mini Or Not shop, the limited run is 400 models. It would serve perfectly well alongside the other whacky zombie apocalypse survivors from Hasslefree as it has the same fine/slim sculpting style. The model is made out of resin.

Had to drive my parents to the airport at 5am so I have only slept 1 hour today, sleep deprivation didn't stop me from finishing my Polish campaign for Flames of War, so expect it to be released on schedule - this Monday :-)








 
 Edit: Added another coat of Matt varnish to her today as she was still way too glossy.

Alice and Cheshire cat [Alice in Wonderland]

Here's the Hasslefree "Alys" miniature I talked about a few days back. Another model I really enjoyed to paint, I wish Hasslefree had made a few more Alice in Wonderland related miniatures - I would probably end up buying them all.

What would be cool however, to buy a second identical model and paint her as "after mental breakdown". Dark hair, sick face, blood splatter on her clothes and paint the cat to look like more evil like in the PC game American McGee's Alice.

I opted to paint the cards on the base "roughly" to make them look somewhat worn. This was simply done by painting rough shapes with brown, bone white and white - then cleaning up the edges with black paint and apply a suit in 2 shades.


I've decided to put all weird/odd models (this one included) in the Theater Macabre category. You'll find the theater troupe and the Hasslefree versions of my classmates there already. All future models that doesn't really fit any other category will be put there.

Hasslefree friends part 4

Last miniature from Hasslefree is "Shimmer", the girl Julia kinda cheated here as she picked her own miniature (wondering why Hasslefree had a lot of miniatures of naked women while browsing their range LOL). In the end though I think it is pretty accurate, being our resident Russian mystery lady and all she has the manners of an elf. She's fun but hard to learn, and has that condemning silent look when she disapproves of a rude joke haha!

So these are my friends and classmates from my Criminology class. We make an odd gang, but as Kurt Cobain said about Nirvana "we are the chosen rejects". And the rest of the class is kind of stiff and boring, easy to make fun of but unbearable to hang out with.

It was also worth the look on their faces to paint up these models and give them away as gifts, Robin said "we have to get him a miniatures as well - too bad none of us can paint" LOL!
I enjoyed painting the Hasslefree models, again they are very fine quality castings and well proportioned and detailed sculpts. I ordered the miniatures straight from Hasslefree and it took about a week to get my stuff which was great.
