A few weeks back, I was priveleged enough to see Jim Gaffigan's Beyond the Pale special on cable, and he had a long riff about Hot Pockets, and it kills me every time I see it, because it speaks to the quality of almost every frozen savory snack designed for the microwave.
I mean, I eat Pillsbury Pizza Pops, and I wouldn't describe the experience as any more than mediocre. I have never in my entire history of eating the product thought to myself, "Hmm, that was exceptional". Usually it is more like "I'm full but my stomach is burning." And some of the most awful things for the microwave I've ever eaten were pocket/calzone type foods.
Now, I am not talking about pocket/calzone type foods that are recommended for the conventional oven, because it seems like there is a little more care in the preparation of those kinds of foods because of the increased cooking time(so things can be raw inside). But really, who thought putting eggs into a pastry was a good idea. Eggs and the microwave just don't go together. Blech.
And is it just me or is the marketing of these types of things just so annoying. I will have the Hot Pockets jingle stuck in my brain for the rest of my life.
So my question to you all is: have you ever had any microwavable pocket-type confection that was great, because I can't think of any that were fabulous.
