What Rocked My World In 2010: A Short Survey

Now the things on this list may not have all come out in 2010, but they certainly colored my vision of this year.

God Hand: I will eventually shut up about this game, but seriously, it rocked my world. I could just start playing it right now, I enjoyed the experience so much. Of course, given how many times I've brought it up, that probably isn't surprising. It was the game I enjoyed the most this year.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: I love, love, love this movie. I can't say that enough. And I am glad that as others get to see it, they love it too. And I've read some grumbling from the people who started with the graphic novels from day one getting miffed that the movie is developing a cult following, like somehow those that love the movie are taking away from their love of the books, and it doesn't have to be like that. We can all get along.

Anamanaguchi: The band that did the soundtrack for the Scott Pilgrim vs The World game. Now I am a huge fan of chiptunes, but this band, they got it right... pitch perfect, especially on tunes like Cheap Store and Rock Club. I mean, the music was half the selling point of the game in the trailers for me (sadly, I still haven't gotten to play the game as of yet since I only have the Wii).

Charlie Brooker: Anyone who is adding to the pop culture and news discourse in a funny and relevant way is good people in my book. The fact that Charlie Brooker is so awesome at doing so is just the icing on the cake. His take on My Sweet 16 is legendary. And not only have I watched a lot of his work, I've also found myself fascinated by his writing as well.

Freddie Wong's Youtube Channel: Freddiew's channel was a revelation. It showed me and a lot of other people that doing awesome action effects doesn't have to be a costly affair, and I am sure there is going to be a new generation of independent directors who are taking a lot of cues from their work, especially since every short they release comes with behind the scenes films as well, letting those who are interested in learning gain some insight into the process. That alone is valuable. The fact that the short films they are producing are awesome is almost a bonus at that point. Time Crisis was the clip that got a lot of views this year.

Ugly Americans: I've always been taken with shows which marry the mundane and the absurd, and Ugly Americans takes the idea of New York and adds all kinds of supernatural creatures to the mix... vampires, zombies, birdmen, demons and the like, all trying to live the American dream together. It is exactly my kind of animated series, as it is a little morbid and a whole lot of funny.

Dragonball Z: I hadn't watched any purely anime shows outside of seeing Macross Plus on Teletoon a few years ago, so I had some preconceptions. Mainly I thought that on some level these series were much like the cartoons I watched as a child... you know, big casts of characters and battles between good and evil, but no one would die and things wouldn't really change from the beginning of the series to the end. Oh, how I was wrong. While there was a lot of filler material in Dragonball Z, there is a huge serial narrative that goes along with it. The original Dragonball was full of humor and gentleness... Z was a lot darker and full of consequences and sacrifices. In the end, I laughed, I cried and I ultimately conquered almost 300 episodes of fine Japanese drama and I was introduced to a whole new world of animated entertainment.

Anyway, I am sure if I thought about it some more, there would be more items on this list, but I think it is decent as is. Happy New Year everybody.

Upcoming Drought

Washington

California

You may not believe it, but we are now starting a mini-drought here in Seattle. After a wetter than normal year, there is now no precipitation in sight until the middle of next week. And even better than that, there will also be considerable sunshine each day, which really helps lessen the midwinter blues.

This is all caused by a strong ridge of high pressure over us (see image) and an associated split in the jet stream with

disturbances and rain hitting central and southern CA (see the precipitation forecast over the next 72 h shown below).

Those poor devils in southern CA are getting hit hard, with many locations in southern CA "enjoying" their wettest or second wettest December on record. Downtown Los Angeles has received 10.23 inches this month, 8.4 inches above normal. Snowpack in the Sierras is over 200% of normal....well they wanted more precipitation!

Returning to our situation, Seattle has had 46.99 inches this year, 10.09 inches above normal. Last year Seattle had 38.17 inches...pretty close to normal. Olympia has had 55.44 inches this year, ONLY 4.89 inches above normal (yes, Olympia is much wetter than Seattle, because Seattle is rain shadowed by the Olympics). And Spokane has had 19.03 inches, 2.36 inches above normal. So this has been a relatively wet year over the state. Cascade snowpack is near normal at this point.

Finally, there is one negative with a ridge of high pressure above us this time of year--cold temperatures at the surface with lots of frost. Clear skies allows the earth to radiate energy to space through the long winter night, resulting in cooling at the surface and the development of nocturnal inversions (temperature increasing with height). The roofs are white outside my window right now. And one can also get freezing fog, so be carefully while driving if you see any fog around.

Most popular posts of 2010

I did this in 2007, 2008 and 2009 so it is time once again to trawl through this blog's statistics and see what posts appeared to attract the most attention (in terms of hits) in 2010. They are:
  1. The iPad and Children
  2. Pick of the litter
  3. Don't touch that cheese
  4. Sleeping games in the car
  5. Lose The Game [Update: it didn't happen]
  6. What to do about all this hair? [Update: it has now been straightened; everyone very happy]
  7. NPR's Planet Money Podcast
  8. Back to School iPad/iPhone Apps
  9. Valentine's Day, seriously
  10. Where economics and psychology meet
In addition, these posts from past years still had enough hits to out do those above (just counting their hits in 2010 alone):

Tut Tut Tut, Condé Nast

As a Canadian, I am prepared to pay more for things. I've learned to live with it. But even with that expectation (one which exists despite how strong our dollar is now), you can push me a little too far.

For instance, I was looking at getting a subscription to Wired Magazine, and they priced it at 40 dollars for 12 issues. That seemed fair.

But I got curious, and I decided to see what Americans were getting. I really shouldn't have done that.

3 Year subscription: 36 dollars and you get a free t-shirt
A 1-year subscription is $10 (with a T-shirt too).

Let's just say after seeing that differential, I am not inclined to subscribe. Especially since I know just how much more it costs to send such items to me than it does to Americans. It certainly isn't four times as much. I might have been willing to go twice as much... but bending Canadians over a table like that is a dick move.

So in short, Condé Nast can blow me, because just for that move, I am not buying their magazines at the newsstand anymore either.

Is This The Movie Quote Of The Year?

I think it is.

You are probably going to be a very successful computer person. But you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole.

The reason I say that is because I have yet to see The Social Network, but I still know that quote. I mean, as much as I love and champion Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, and quote it daily (He punched the highlights out of her hair!), I think the above is indeed the quote of the year.

Syndies slumber

Syndicated game shows might as well have mailed it in for the week ending December 19. Broadcasting & Cable presents the unexciting news...

Wheel of Fortune 7.2 - down a tick
Jeopardy 6.1 - flat
Millionaire 2.3 - flat
Family Feud 1.7 - down a tick
5th Grader 1.0 - flat, this is getting real old
Lyrics 1.0 - wow, up a whole tick to a season high

At least Lyrics crawled up to the big one-oh. Nowadays, that's not such a horrible number. Nothing yet from TV by the Numbers on viewership averages for the twin towers.

Meanwhile, weekly blogger Aaron tells us that Cash Cab will roll through the syndie streets starting January 10. Aaron speculates that some other syndie gamer, probably Lyrics, will soon get the ax. I dunno, I wouldn't look for a midseason cancellation. This week Lyrics actually got the second-best household rating of any syndication rookie, only three ticks behind Nancy Grace.

Incursion beta testing 30/12

Tried out another batch of scenarios for the Incursion expansion with my buddy Calle.

Like in my previous Beta testing entry I can not tell you any details about the mission content. I can tell you that these 3 missions we played tonight included MI13 commandos and Gracie, and double board scenarios in which the MI13 and Lucky 7th had a joint operation.

I can tell you guys right now however, that the guy writing all the new missions, Peter Bogdasarian, is crazy good in finding ideas for scenarios. Every single scenario is unique, feels fresh and is often filled with cool special rules, twists and you will find a few good laughs in the scenario descriptions. We actually laughed out loud at one mission detail - the Allies had to push a button, and if they got one specific result the German played should start to either sing or hum German patriotic songs - as long and loud as he wanted to. The allied played had to pay 1 action point to shut him up LOL!! Genius :-D

I think there will be scenarios in this expansion for everyone, for those who like playing Lucky 7th, Germans, MI13, people who like to play solo, 2-player games, double board misions, new rules etc.
Something to really look forward too, this will be one really kickass game once the expansion is released. Going from 9/10 to 10/10 for sure.

John Leguizamo Is Doing Another One Man Show

AWESOME!

I love his one man shows... and I hope this one gets picked up for cable too.

All I have to say.*

* yet another slow week, short post.

Some Secrets of the Third Reich game pics

Played SoTR at a friend’s house, tried out an unconventional "Vampire" platoon made up of Frau Tear vampire character, making all regular troops become "Thralls". And added 3 Vampires in support.

They did not fare well, they fared exceptionally bad, since my opponent had lots of flamethrowers - pretty much the best way to rid yourself of bloodsuckers in this game. So my Uncanny Resilience troops morphed into "unarmored" vs flamethrowers, reducing their Down/Goner chances from 4/6 to 2/4...

And vampire in mist form are usually VERY hard to kill, as it takes medium high explosive + , but flamethrowers affect the mist as well. So almost my entire platoon was BBQ'd, except for one lucky vampire who killed a squad of Drop Troops by himself. But that was still not enough to cash in on the RP invested into that model. Vampire 8RP killed Drop Troops worth 7RP.

Anyway, I just wanted to try out multiple Vampires since we played 70RP which allows you to experiment with units and configurations you never use in regular builds.

Enough of my ranting, here are some pictures (Gretel was used as stand in for Frau Tear).

 My army was:

Frau Tear
Command + Panzerfaust
2x Grenadier squads w LMG teams
2x Panzerschreck teams
1x Sniper team
1x Light mortar team
1x Aufklärer squad
1x HMG team
3x Vampires

Opponent army was

5x Drop Trooper squads, w a mix of all weapons allowed, but everyone but 1 squad had flamers
2x Aufklärer squads
1x Light drop mech w flamer and MG
1x Medium Drop mech w dual flamers and MG

Pictures are taken with my new camera, which shows great potential but I'm still a complete noob with it, so I expect to learn all settings over the coming weeks.
