The Witcher 3: Wild hunt announced!

As someone who is a huge fan of the Witcher books and last two PC games I was extremely happy to hear the announcement of a third game that is coming next year.
The biggest and perhaps most welcome surprise however was that the third game will be open world much like Skyrim (but bigger!).

I think that is a great decision. The past two games have been very linear when it comes to environments, and with the rich world of the Witcher universe with all the central/eastern European folklore and various interesting locations an open world will most likely be a very interesting place to travel and explore.

It will be interesting to see how CD Project RED handles this new challenge as they have not made an open world before, though I'm confident in their gameplay and storytelling abilities. The main story is supposed to be more personal this time around than the previous two games that were about world politics, it's implied that the game will include the Wild Hunt and the main love interest from the book the sorceress Yennifer - both have been mentioned in previous games and the Wild Hunt briefly appeared in Witcher 1. Both are also quite central to the character of Geralt so it will be interesting to see what they do with it.

I also hope that we will see a return of the comic side quests with Zoltan and Dandelion (such as the drunken party quest in Witcher 1 which had me laugh out loud). The books contain some very funny stories and are not dead serious all of the time.

It also seems that the new open world is so big that horses have been introduced as a means of transportation, and the developers have mentioned monster hunting, another thing from the first game that I really liked but which only made a limited appearance in the sequel. Travelling the countryside and being monster slayers for hire is the main occupation of Witchers after all.

Console gamers need not fear, it seems like they will release Witcher 3 on consoles as well. It is however implied that it may be released for "next generation" consoles, so it's hard to tell exactly which consoles will be covered.
