Spending the evening catching up on new and old movies I watched "Invasion of the body snatchers", the Donald Sutherland one from 1978. It's a great movie with good atmosphere and creepy factor. The story revolves around some kind of parasite from outer space (yes very Lovecraftian), which infests and then replicates a human. The "copy" then disposes of the original person and takes his or her place in society.
The movie does a great job showing how the parasite spreads, starting out with a single person, who starts to act weird and creeps out his wife - then more people start to act weird. Garbage trucks drive around in the night and pick up big packages from the streets left outside of people's homes, people with no connection to one another start to have secret meetings, and the main characters initially think they are imagining things, then that they are going crazy - but in the end they realize what is happening. By that time most of the town have been replaced by the alien parasite and the thing is spreading out of town, across the country and eventually the world.
The acting is good, you get to see a young Jeff Goldblum, it's funny how he is acting quirky even at this early stage of his career, Donald Sutherland is also really good as the guy who is trying to figure out what's happening. The special effects are also really good, and the general pacing of the movie is great. As it starts out as a slow cooker with isolated weird scenes and then adds more and more paranoia only to go into full panic towards the end.
Highly recommended if you like movies that are more about the suspense and atmosphere rather than gore and jumpscares.
